I never thought that I would be the type of person who would ever need the services of a chiropractic physician. I mean, why would I ever have to see one, I was in shape, I do not have any skeletal problems, I drink lots of milk, and while I am athletic, I do not do anything that puts a great deal of strain on my spine. The other day I found out just how wrong I really was.
I had no idea that my world and preconceived notions was about to change when I stepped outside that day. The only thing I was thinking about was the trail ride my best friend and I were going to go on. I couldn’t decide if I should take Bingo, my sedate gelding who has done and seen just about everything, or if I should ride my fill, Caper, who is sweet natured but is also green and a can be a bit opinionated. By the time I reached the spot where my horses were grazing, I decided that I should play it safe.
I was holding the lead rope in one hand and trying to get the gate unlatched when the world exploded. I don’t know what triggered it, if Bingo got spooked, or bitten by a bug, or just decided that he didn’t want to go for a ride. All I know is that one second he was standing quietly and the next he was in motion. He pulled back so hard that my grip on the lead rope caused my feet to slide out from underneath me. I landed with a bone jarring thud, mud splashing up all around me. I sat there for moment trying to access the damage while Bongo, whose quiet personality had returned just as quickly as it had disappeared peered down his long nose at me with an astonished expression.
It took two days of me being barely able to move, before I went to see my doctor. I hoped he would at least prescribe some pain medication. Instead, he looked me over and recommended that I should see a chiropractic practitioner instead.
I have heard horror stories about people who have gone to a chiropractic practitioner and actually come away in worse shape, the doctor of chiropractic actually made the damage worse. Since I did not want that to be my story, I got online and started surfing the websites of different Toronto doctors of chiropractic, continuing to look until I found one that had an x-ray machine. That was exactly what I was looking for. I figured that if they could take current x-rays of my spine, they would far less likely to screw anything up.The great thing about the whole deal was that I was able to use the chiropractic practitioner’s website to book my appointment and send the medical records that they needed.
The doctor of chiropractic I chose spent a long time with me. We discussed how when Bingo yanked at me and I fell my spine had become misaligned. The reason for my sever pain was my muscles were trying to adapt to ways that the misalignment had changed my posture. I was very impressed with how coherently he spoke as well as the fact that he took the time to really answer my questions and address my concerns.
One of the interesting things I learned was that chiropractic physicians and chiropractic work is no longer covered by Ontario’s health care plan. Luckily, I do have private health insurance which did cover the expense or else I would have had to pay out of my own pocket. I have never been so grateful to have the insurance.
